Quantum economics is an emerging interdisciplinary framework that applies the mathematical structures, probability logic, and conceptual insights of quantum theory to economic behavior, financial markets, money, strategic interaction, and institutional decision-making. Its central argument is that many economic phenomena are poorly described by classical models built around equilibrium, independent agents, stable preferences, and linear causality. Modern economies are instead characterized by uncertainty, reflexivity, interdependence, expectation formation, information asymmetry, network contagion, behavioral inconsistency, and sudden regime shifts. The field should not be understood merely as a metaphor. At its strongest, quantum economics uses quantum probability, Hilbert spaces, interference effects, superposition-like states, contextuality, and nonseparability to model economic decisions and systems that classical probability and expected utility theory often struggle to explain. Recent literature identifies quantum economics, quantum finance, quantum decision-making, and quantum game theory as major research clusters within this emerging field.A careful formulation of quantum economics does not claim that consumers, firms, or markets are literally microscopic quantum particles. Rather, it argues that the mathematics of quantum theory may provide a more flexible language for modeling situations in which preferences are unstable, choices are context-dependent, information changes the system being measured, and economic outcomes emerge probabilistically rather than deterministically. Quantum cognition and quantum decision theory already use this type of framework to explain behavioral anomalies, order effects, framing effects, violations of classical probability, and decision-making under ambiguity. In finance, quantum-inspired models have been applied to option pricing, price dynamics, volatility, market psychology, and financial uncertainty. Some work uses Dirac notation, path integrals, Hamiltonians, and quantum probability to reconsider classical models such as Black-Scholes and Cox-Ross-Rubinstein. In strategy and game theory, quantum game theory extends classical strategic interaction by allowing for richer forms of coordination, uncertainty, and interdependence among decision-makers.The promise of quantum economics is therefore not that it replaces classical economics entirely. Its value lies in expanding the economist’s toolkit for situations where classical assumptions become too rigid: financial crises, speculative bubbles, behavioral contradictions, systemic risk, digital platforms, AI-mediated markets, algorithmic pricing, institutional trust, and global economic contagion.
