Learn from a World Champion! Mikhail Botvinnik became World Champion in 1948 and held the title until 1963, successfully defending it against David Bronstein, Vassily Smyslov, and Mihail Tal, or reclaiming it in rematch matches. Botvinnik introduced systematic scientific methods to chess, studying openings with an eye towards their typical middlegame structures and developing effective strategies. His strategic approach is a consistent thread throughout his work. Known as the 'Patriarch' in the Soviet Union, the 6th World Champion established a chess school after retiring from competitive play, sharing his knowledge with many eager students, including Garry Kasparov and Vladimir Kramnik.
