Vaccinium corymbosum ‘Bluejay’
The Bluejay Northern Highbush Blueberry is a robust variety developed by Michigan State University, perfect for USDA zones 4–8. It delivers delicious, firm berries in mid-season, ideal for freezing, baking, and making jam. Beginning in the second or third year, expect consistent harvests of 10–20 pounds per bush, with fruit held on long stems for extended picking periods. Thriving in full sun and acidic, well-drained soil, this cultivar also offers year-round appeal: bell-shaped white flowers attract pollinators in spring, and vibrant foliage colors enhance fall landscapes. Self-fertile yet benefiting from cross-pollination, it suits edible hedges, containers, and wildlife-friendly gardens. Use netting at fruit set to protect your harvest, or plant extra bushes to share with birds.
