A Gipsy of the Horn: The Narrative of a Voyage Round the World in a Windjammer Twenty Years Ago, (Paperback)

"A Gipsy of the Horn" is an evocative first-hand narrative detailing a circumnavigation of the globe during the final days of the merchant sailing ship. Rex Clements provides a meticulous and atmospheric account of his experiences as a young seaman aboard a windjammer, offering a rare glimpse into the rigors and romance of life on the high seas at the beginning of the twentieth century. The work is particularly noted for its powerful description of the passage around the formidable Cape Horn, capturing the sheer scale of the elements and the constant struggle against the forces of nature.

The narrative blends technical detail with lyrical observation, documenting the intricacies of managing a square-rigged vessel alongside the camaraderie and hardships of the crew. From the stillness of the tropical doldrums to the violent gales of the Southern Ocean, the work serves as a vital historical record of a bygone maritime era. "A Gipsy of the Horn" is more than a mere travelogue; it is a profound exploration of human endurance and a classic of nautical literature that honors the legacy of the great sailing ships. This account remains a compelling choice for enthusiasts of maritime history, adventure, and the enduring call of the sea.

This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
